By Rosalind Russell – Sault Ste. Marie is looking at cameras to slow down speeders especially in safety zones.
Communities are looking at various ways to slow down speedsters especially along the North Shore Corridor of Highway 17 and will be looking to see how public input process goes in Sault Ste. Marie, which is asking for public input on automated speed enforcement.
It is a system that uses a camera and a speed measurement device to help enforce speed limits in school zones and community safety zones.
If a vehicle exceeds the posted speed limit in an enforced area, the system captures an image that is stored and reviewed by a Provincial Offences Officer.
The hearings will be held next week and again in early October.
Sudbury installed six of the devices, which can be moved to various locations, in March and brought them on line earlier this month.
The City is hosting two open houses for the public to attend and provide feedback regarding the system.
