By Rosalind Russell – Espanola council approved the continuation of a condensed work week on a permanent basis.
Town Clerk Joseph Burke says a trial period took place from July to December, which worked quite well for municipal staff.
He says some employees now work Monday to Thursday while others work Tuesday to Friday, for longer shifts, which has also allowed the municipal office to be open longer hours from Monday-Friday 7:30 am to 5:00 pm.
Burke adds the condensed work week has reduced sick time, resulted in a better work/life balance and overall better mental health for employees.
He admits for operational reasons, the pilot has not been proven to work for other departments of the town so far, so only municipal staff has the condensed schedule for the time being.
