By Rosalind Russell – Canada’s broadcast regulator is requiring online streaming services to contribute 5% of their Canadian revenues to support our country’s broadcasting system.
The C-R-T-C says the obligation starts in the 2024-25 broadcast year and will provide about $200 million a year in new funding.
The money will be directed to areas of immediate need like local news on radio and tv, French-language content, Indigenous content, and content created by and for equity-deserving communities and others.
Online streaming services will also be able to direct part of their contributions to support Canadian television content directly.
