Doctor shortage growing

By Rosalind Russell – The list of Ontarians without a family doctor continues to grow.

The Ontario College of Family Physicians says that 2.5 million people in the province are now without one.

The list grew by 160,000 people in the last six months.

College officials say system-wide issues are stretching family doctors ‘far beyond capacity’.

They add a solution that could support family doctors is reducing the nearly 20 hours a week of paperwork family physicians are faced with, as well as increasing compensation.

The college says wages have not kept pace with inflation and don’t reflect the complex care doctors provide.
