Election delay due to wildfires

By Rosalind Russell – Voters in the Northwest Territories will be heading to the polls six weeks later than expected this fall.

This after the legislative assembly voted to change the date of the next general election from early October to mid-November because of wildfires impacting the territory.

Meantime, it’s still not known when evacuated residents of Yellowknife will be able to return home even though two fires threatening the city are considered as ”being held”.

Officials say a phased-in approach will be used but essential services like health care need to be in place before people can return.
