Elliot Lake council approves wage increase for firefighters

By Rosalind Russell – Elliot Lake council has approved a $2 per hour wage increase for firefighters.

Fire Chief John Thomas informed council that there are 16 volunteers in the department with the last wage increase made in April 2016 bringing members up to $19 per hour, well below the provincial average of $25.

He says last year, firefighters spent 124 hours training or fighting active fires at a cost of just over $70,000.

Thomas says the wage increase would mean an additional $39,000 on the budget.

Council unanimously approved the increase bringing the hourly wage up to $21 per hour.
