Elliot Lake council provides grant for new housing development

By Rosalind Russell – Acting on a motion from their June meeting, Elliot Lake City council has approved a recommendation for a $20,000 Community Improvement Plan Grant for a new housing development.

Manager of Economic Development, Steve Antunes, says the funds will go towards building 23 rental townhouses at 80 Dieppe Avenue, which has been vacant for over 20 years.

Antunes adds the program is meant to spur development adding the addition of the townhouses is at least a $15-million investment in the community.

He adds the grant will be issued when the townhomes receive an occupancy permit.

Antunes adds the program also includes a tax relief program created to encourage new development offering property owners four years of discounts on a sliding scale.
