Elliot Lake Fire Department responds to a fire in downtown core

By Rosalind Russell – Elliot Lake fire crews were at the scene of a residential fire in the downtown core until late yesterday afternoon.

Elliot Lake Fire Chief John Thomas says the department received a 911 call shortly before three am yesterday for a residential fire at 7 Charles Walk.

He says upon arrival on the scene, firefighters reported heavy smoke and flames showing from the second storey with the fire brought under control shortly after ten am although the crew stayed on site to ensure there were no hot spots.

Thomas says there is heavy fire damage to the structure and are waiting for the arrival of the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office to assist in the investigation as to the probable cause of the fire.

He adds there were no injuries, and the estimated cost of the damages is still unknown, although it is believed to be in the millions.

Several individuals have also been displaced.

The investigation continues.
