Despite the rain, students and staff at various French schools throughout the district took part in several events to mark Franco-Ontarian Day.
On Wednesday, dozens of students and staff at École secondaire catholique Renaissance took part in a flag-raising at Espanola Municipal Hall.
Mayor Doug Gervais says he was impressed by their tenacity in celebrating their heritage and their exuberance when the flag was raised.
Students and staff at Jeunesse-Nord in Blind River dressed in green and white, the official colours of the flag celebrating they’re being a part of the Francophonie in Ontario.
They also took to the stage celebrating in song.
The provincial Franco-Ontarian day, celebrated officially since 2010, on September 25 marks the anniversary of the Franco-Ontarian flag, which was flown for the first time in Sudbury in 1975.
