By Rosalind Russell – Sault Ste. Marie MP Terry Sheehan was in Elliot Lake yesterday to announce FedNor funding for three local projects.
He says the brunt of the funding $1,600,000 will go to the East Algoma Community Futures Development Corporation in support of operating costs for a five-year period retroactive to April 1st, 2024.
Sheehan says the funding will help the corporation provide business counselling and investment services to small and medium-sized businesses, as well as leadership in community strategic planning and socio-economic development.
The corporation has assisted over 50 new and established businesses and created over 100 jobs in the last few years.
The remaining FedNor funds will go to the City of Elliot Lake for two projects.
He says $72,000 will support the community in developing a detailed tourism strategy providing the city with detailed activities and measurable goals on how to increase tourism.
And, the remaining $24,000 will support the community in completing infrastructure service for a new industrial park development, which will include project design and electrical hook up of a lift station.
Sheehan adds the two projects will strengthen the local economy by supporting business development, and by bolstering hospitality and retail in the community.
