Fire causes heavy damage to Elliot Lake residence

By Rosalind Russell – The Elliot Lake Fire Department responded to a fire at a residence on Tuesday afternoon where two people were brought to hospital and two pets were lost.

Fire Chief John Thomas says the fire was reported at 187 Mississauga Avenue via a 911 call late Tuesday afternoon.

He says the fire was quickly brought under control by five pm, and two residents transported to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

They were unable to save the two family pets.

Thomas adds there was heavy fire damage in the kitchen area and smoke damage throughout the residence estimating the loss at around $250,000.

Thomas would like to remind the public to never leave combustibles on the stove including appliances containing plastic and make sure every storey and sleeping area has a working smoke alarm.
