Funding accessed for First Nation archeological sites in Blind River and Mississauga FN

By Rosalind Russell – Mississauga First Nation has accessed funding to carry out research on historical sites on its lands and in the Blind River area.

With funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, officials say they’ll carry out their own research on the sites in conjunction with the University of Toronto including several burial mounds that have been fenced off on the Huron Pines Golf Course.

Earlier this summer, Chief Brent Niganobe met with council where it was agreed to cordon off the sites that had been identified and to form a working group to ensure preservation and education.

Niganobe says they will not be digging in the burial grounds, rather they will be ensuring preservation of the sites.

He says his home First Nation has also partnered with the Canadian Museum of History and the Ojibwe Cultural Centre on Manitoulin Island to repatriate both human remains and artifacts back to the First Nation.

In all,16 such sites have been identified.
