By Rosalind Russell – During question period yesterday Nickel Belt MPP France Gélinas asked the Minister of Health Sylvia Jones why her Ministry is downloading her responsibilities to municipalities when it comes to consumption sites.
She says a person dies every 2.5 hours from the toxic drug supply in Ontario with consumption and treatment sites being instrumental in preventing more deaths.
She says without the sites there will be more calls to first responders, which could mean limited availability for other emergencies, and busier emergency departments.
Gélinas says the Ford government’s Bill 223 introduced Monday effectively ends any supervised consumption sites in Ontario, with the ones still open to close by the end of next March.
In turn, the Ford Government says it plans to set up 10 Homelessness and Addiction Recovery Treatment Hubs that will integrate related services by the end of 2025.
