High school learns about survival skills

By Rosalind Russell – In partnership with Sudbury Indie Cinema Co-op and the Outdoor Adventure Leadership program at Laurentian University, 50 students and teachers from Espanola High School recently attended SOAR – Sudbury Outdoor Adventure Reels, a film festival celebrating the relationship with the great outdoors.

Students watched the documentary Keepers of the Trail and held a Q&A session with filmmaker David Hartman and Kielyn Marrone from Espanola who was a finalist in season 7 of Alone.

Hartman’s film follows a group of nine winter travellers as they walk north between Canada’s two great rail lines using traditional methods handed down over the decades to survive.

Espanola High School is committed to its Outdoor Education program and to furthering their commitment to protecting, celebrating, and learning from the natural environment.

The field trip was part of this commitment as a Platinum level Eco School through Eco Schools Canada.
