By Rosalind Russell – Ontario’s hospital workers are ‘Running on Empty’ according to a new study released by CUPE and the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions.
Along with 26 healthcare workers across the province being interviewed, polling was also done. President of CUPE’s hospital division, Michael Hurley says a common theme they heard was people dread going to work.
He says the anxiety is very high among staff adding the stress of bed shortages is also a factor in how health workers are dealing with the stresses of their job.
Hurley says the government needs to act now.
Pointing to 870 emergency room closures last year, he says patients are feeling the impact of staffing shortages — noting these problems will only get worse if they aren’t addressed.
