International Women’s Day is this Sunday – gathering today

By Rosalind Russell – International Women’s Day is this weekend, and a local group is hosting a gathering today in Whitefish River First Nation.

Mnidoo Mnising, the local coalition against domestic violence is hosting a gathering at the local community centre from 10 am to 2 pm today.

Three keynote speakers and a four-legged friend will join the group: UCCM Police Constable Nick Beaudry and his dog, Ben, a specially trained canine police dog, Teresa Nahwegahbow, also with the UCCM Police; and Leanne Lewis, focusing on women advocacy.

The day also includes displays, community partners, a photo booth and luncheon.

The 2025 International Women’s Day theme is: ‘March Forward’ commemorating 30 years since 189 countries unanimously adopted the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action for gender equality in 1985.

The UN Women theme for 2025 is a reminder that we must continue to take “bold steps” on gender equality.
