By Rosalind Russell – It was the children who enjoyed Elliot Lake is Kraft Hockeyville 2024 the most if the celebrations are any indication.
Elliot Lake’s own little warrior, Elijah Hennessey, was happily surprised with the NHL committee bringing the Stanley Cup to his home, all part of the Community Celebration held on Friday.
Dozens got to get their photo taken with the historical iconic trophy.
The weekend was capped off with thousands attending first the practice sessions of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa Senators followed by a packed Sudbury Community Arena for the pre-season game that saw the Penguins take the win five to two.
The City of Elliot Lake was also acknowledged with resident Ponto Paparo singing the national anthem followed by the trophy presentation to local organizers Lara Hukezalie and Amanda McKay.
The first intermission recognized the late Connor Pelletier Commanda, a talented hockey player, who passed away at 17 years of age in 2016 in a car collision with the second period intermission recognizing Bryan McKay who was an Elliot Lake coach and teacher for over 50 years.
