By Rosalind Russell – Students at École secondaire catholique La Renaissance in Espanola had an opportunity to take part in real-life experiences as part of their science lessons.
For several years now, the students have been taking part in a fish farming project which enables them to support the community by releasing a variety of fish into the waterways in the Espanola area.
By taking part in this project, the students discover the importance of ecosystems while at the same time integrating several subjects such as chemistry with the determination of the pH system, biology with the anatomy and development of fish, as well as the overall effect on the ecosystem.
The La Renaissance students play a key role in the success of the project by being responsible for the upkeep of the fish farm and monitoring the development of the eggs until they hatched.
The eggs have now been released for another year and the program will return to the school once again this fall.
