LaCloche communities considering municipal accommodation tax

By Rosalind Russell – The municipalities of the LaCloche Foothills may be looking further into the implementation of a municipal accommodation tax for short-term stays.

Louisa Nadeau, Manager of Economic Development & Regional Transit, made presentations to all four councils on the subject with two agreeing to look further into the concept.

She says the tax is used by municipalities for tourism or economic development projects.

She adds several municipalities have it in place including Blind River and Sudbury, ranging from 4% to 6%.

Nadeau adds it requires the accommodation businesses to collect the tax and remit it to the municipality, so some training would be involved.

Nairn & Hyman Township voted it down since there are no short-term stay businesses in their municipality.

However, Baldwin Township and the Town of Espanola have all agreed to look into its possible implementation as a regional initiative.

Nadeau will also be speaking to Sables-Spanish Rivers.

Nadeau says if the majority is in favour, she will now look for input from potentially affected businesses and options for implementation.
