By Rosalind Russell – A Manitoulin Island municipality will be filling a vacant council seat by appointment through letters of interest.
Billings Township received word that Councillor Jim Cahill resigned his position in mid-December, but no reason for his resignation was given.
Council passed a motion accepting the resignation then considered its options for filling the now vacant seat on council, either by appointment or by holding a by-election.
A by-election would cost thousands of dollars, so after much discussion, council unanimously voted for the option of appointing an eligible elector.
Council has set January 31 as the nomination deadline for nominations with a final list of candidates to be posted on February 5th and a special council meeting to formalize the appointment the following evening.
