By Rosalind Russell – Children and youth in Ontario are at risk of not being able to access the mental health services they need when they need them.
That’s according to Auditor General Shelley Spence, who says one in five children in Ontario will experience mental health challenges … and the province needs to ensure young people and their families have timely access to services and supports government-funded agencies provide.
In a new report, Spence shares the average wait time for intensive treatment for children and youth experiencing mental health problems was 105 days in 2024, that’s up 94 days from the year before. Among others, her office is recommending the province adopt a needs-based approach to allocate resources to better support youth mental health across Ontario.
