Mississauga First Nation band services reopen following threats

By Rosalind Russell – Mississauga First Nation cancelled their last council meeting and closed band offices and services following what is being called a credible threat to the safety of staff and council.

In a community statement, Chief Brent Niganobe says the cancellation and band office closure last Wednesday came following a recommendation by their First Nation police.

He says council had expected some protest over the creation of a community fund from treaty settlement funding but was informed that there was a threat to take over the band office, overthrow council and take over the governance of the First Nation.

He says the offices will reopen today, OPP is also assisting, and there will be a screening process in place.

He adds council will hold its next meeting on August 14th.
