By Rosalind Russell – The province is introducing new requirements to get a secondary school diploma for the first time in 25 years.
Changes include a new financial literacy requirement for graduating, and the return of home economics.
Minister of Education Stephen Lecce says too many parents, employers, and students themselves have told him they’re graduating without sufficient financial literacy and basic life skills.
To meet the financial literacy requirement starting in 2025, students will need to get 70 per cent or higher in their grade 10 math course. Officials say it’ll include managing a household budget, saving for a home, learning to invest and more.
Lecce adds $14 million dollars will also be invested for career coaching for Grade 9 and 10 students next year, modernizing the career education programming in schools, showcasing the skills trades and other priority economic sectors.
