By Rosalind Russell – Gore Bay Mayor Ron Lane says it was satisfying to cut the cake celebrating the completion of the new terminal at the Gore Bay-Manitoulin Airport over the weekend.
He says the airport located a few miles west of Gore Bay was built in 1947 by the Federal Government as an emergency landing location for civilian and military aircraft, but these days it services aircraft of all sizes including jet aircraft and is one of the few smaller fully certified full service airdromes in northeastern Ontario.
Lane says some years ago it was transferred to a municipal airport commission made up of representation and governance of the municipalities of Gore Bay, Gordon/Barrie Island and Burpee/Mills.
He adds the project owes its’ completion to funding and supports from all three levels of government and private donors and now includes modern state of the art terminal, a new helipad for medivac services, an enlarged apron and a new emergency generator plant.
