New triplex approved by Espanola despite protest

By Rosalind Russell – Espanola council has given its approval to the construction of a new triplex in town despite protests by several residents.

Council held a public hearing last night for input on the construction of a new triplex for 134 Syroid Street.

Several residents were in attendance and were vocal in their opposition to the build asking that a single-family dwelling be considered instead.

Mayor Doug Gervais pointed out that the number one priority of the Strategic Plan is new housing, which is considered a crisis in Espanola.

Councillor Aidan Kallionen says he understands the concerns raised but adds there are hundreds of people on the waiting list for housing in Espanola and he must consider the wider community and the benefits of a new build, including more taxes and attracting new people.

Deputy Mayor Angela Kelly also stated it is a priority and their mandate as council to grow the town.

Council approved the zoning amendment bylaw, and the project will now move forward.
