Northern Credit Union merger affects Espanola financial institution

By Rosalind Russell – An Espanola banking institution is part of a merger with another.

A couple of credit unions in the north have received regulatory approval to merge.

They include Northern Credit Union, which serves Espanola and 23 other communities and Copperfin Credit Union, with locations in Thunder Bay and Kenora.

Officials say the merger is designed to improve financial resilience and ensure a sustainable future.

Voting on the merger begins June 3 with one dollar for every member that casts a vote, being donated to support food insecurity in Northern Ontario.
