By Rosalind Russell – The north’s five Large Urban Mayors are looking to maximize opportunities for economic development and strengthen the social safety net.
Provincial and federal advocacy was the focus of their meeting in the city on Friday.
One immediate priority includes the Ontario Government’s Homelessness and Addiction Recovery Treatment Hub model.
Officials say they’re asking the province to commit to one of the hubs in each of their cities to address the opioid crisis.
Federally, the mayors are calling on Ottawa to speed up the new Rural Community Immigration Pilot and make it permanent, to address regional labour shortages.
They say the previous pilot was a valuable success for the region.
