Rainbow Schools have once again joined forces to fight hunger and feed hope this holiday season by participating in the Edgar Burton Food Drive.
From festive concerts and community canvasses to spirit days and sports events, staff and students took every opportunity to collect donations in support of this important community campaign.
All donations will support food banks in jurisdictions served by the Board – benefiting students and families in Sudbury, Espanola and Manitoulin Island.
In total, Rainbow Schools collected 35,017 food items and $57,830.86 in monetary donations for area food banks – which translates to 382,002 food items for families in need. MacLeod Public School contributed an astounding $15,000 and 304 food items to this impressive total.
“Staff and students in Rainbow Schools continually come together to support individuals and families in the communities that we serve,” said Director of Education Bruce Bourget. “Through initiatives such as the food drive, students learn values that contribute to our mission of enabling students to become confident, caring members of society.”
He added: “We are tremendously grateful to those who gave so generously – at a time when it’s really needed most. This continues to be a true community effort and we thank those who made this year’s campaign a tremendous success.”
Director Bourget thanked Brad Smith, Vice-Principal of Lockerby Composite School, and Andrew Kendall, Vice-Principal of Espanola High School, for leading the food drive in Rainbow Schools.
He also acknowledged staff and students who found fun and creative ways to engage the entire school community to increase donations.
