Rainbow Schools take part in Take Our Kids to Work on November 6th

Grade 9 students in Rainbow Schools will spend the day at work shadowing a parent, guardian, relative, friend or volunteer host on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 as part of the national Take Our Kids to Work program.

“Take Our Kids to Work Day encourages Grade 9 students to make connections between the classroom and the world of work,” says Bruce Bourget, Director of Education for Rainbow District School Board. “This event reinforces the importance of obtaining a secondary school diploma.”

He adds: “Local employers have an important role to play in preparing their future workforce. This day will serve as a catalyst to engage students in career discussions with role models in various sectors.”

Now in its 30th year, the Take Our Kids to Work program provides Grade 9 students with the opportunity to experience the world of work as they explore possible career paths.

Each year, some 200,000 Grade 9 students and over 75,000 businesses and organizations participate in Take Our Kids to Work Day across Canada.

The Learning Partnership began the program in Ontario in 1994, and has since expanded to reach students in all provinces and territories. The Student Commission of Canada, a charitable organization that works to empower young people, their peers and communities, now facilitates the program.

Students can obtain information about Take Our Kids to Work at area Rainbow secondary schools. Parents/guardians of participating students will be required to complete and sign a consent form. Parents/guardians should check with employers about any age restrictions for placement.

Employers are encouraged to identify information that students will need to know in advance to ensure a safe workplace visit. All Grade 9 students will receive Workplace Health and Safety Awareness training in preparation for their day in the world of work.
