Rural Economic Development Program to help boost the local economy

By Rosalind Russell – The Ontario government is investing more than $5.7 million in 85 projects including two in our local area that create jobs and boost economic development in rural communities across the province.

Lisa Thompson, Minister of Rural Affairs, says the funding through the recent intake of the Rural Economic Development program, supports projects that diversify and grow local economies, build community capacity and address barriers to economic development and labour force challenges.

Locally, the City of Elliot Lake will implement an eco- and geo-tourism strategy to promote local tourism to a broader market throughout Canada with a $16,176 grant.

The Township of Sables-Spanish Rivers will also receive $2,566 to erect cultural heritage pole banners within the township, specifically featuring local veterans, to promote culture and community engagement.
