Sables-Spanish Rivers Township wants more input before making decision on new tax

By Rosalind Russell – Sables-Spanish Rivers Township wants more information before making any decision on moving forward with the municipal accommodation tax.

Louisa Nadeau, Manager of Economic Development & Regional Transit, made a presentation on behalf of the LaCloche Foothills Municipal Association outlining how the tax can be implemented and how it can increase revenues for municipalities.

She says the revenue could be divided between the member municipalities and be earmarked for tourism or economic development initiatives.

However, Deputy Mayor Mike Mercieca (MEER-kay-sha) says he personally is opposed to implementing the tax, adding he still has several questions, especially when it comes to the added responsibilities for accommodation businesses.

He says council has decided to discuss it further before giving Nadeau a definitive response.

Baldwin Township and the Town of Espanola have already agreed in moving forward as long as it is a regional initiative while Nairn & Hyman Township has said no.

Nadeau says if the township agrees to move forward, her next step would be consulting with the businesses in the North Shore corridor and a draft for implementation.
