Saving lives by expanding testing program

By Rosalind Russell – The province is marking what it calls an historic expansion to the Ontario Breast Screening Program.

The Health Ministry says starting yesterday women over the age of 40 can self-refer for publicly funded mammograms through the program.

Officials say it will give an additional one million women the option to connect to important screening services to detect and treat breast cancer sooner.

The province says research has shown regular screening with mammograms can help detect breast cancer before it has the chance to spread.
