School boards launch lawsuit against social media

By Rosalind Russell – Several southern Ontario school boards say banning cellphones in classrooms is only one piece of the puzzle and are demanding accountability from social media tech giants.

Seven boards – including one in Muskoka — have joined four others in a lawsuit calling on social media giants to redesign their products to keep students safe.

The boards claim social media products, intentionally designed for compulsive use, have rewired the way children think, behave, and learn.

They say changes would result in a reduction in mental health harms to youth and disruptions to the education system.

The lawsuit also looks for compensation for losses related to tackling what the boards say is the crisis social media has created in schools.
