Sisters in Spirit Day

By Rosalind Russell – Noojmowin Teg in Espanola will be marking Sisters in Spirit Day this Thursday.

The Sisters in Spirit Vigil is a national event held annually on October 4th to honour Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls & Gender Diverse People.

Noojmowin Teg Health Centre will be taking a moment to honour those who have been impacted by the ongoing crisis and will continue to do their part to support the community.

According to research from the Native Women’s Association of Canada, First Nation Indigenous women make up approximately 10% of all female homicides in Canada despite being roughly 3% of the Canadian population

Of the cases brought forward, over half are women and girls aged 31 and younger.

Although most of the cases in the NWAC database are in an urban area, information on safety and resources for communities is also important for on reserve and rural areas.
