SIU Charges Sault Ste. Marie Police Officer for sexual assault offences

By Rosalind Russell – A Sault Ste. Marie police officer is facing sexual assault charges.

The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, says he has reasonable grounds to believe a Sault Ste. Marie Police Service officer committed criminal offences.

The SIU says the investigations concluded that there was sufficient evidence to proceed with sexual assault charges against the officer in relation to two women arising from incidents in December 2022.

He says a sergeant with the municipal service is facing charges of two counts of sexual assault.

The SIU says the accused has a Sault Ste. Marie court date on January 8.

As the matter is before the courts, the SIU will not provide further comment on the investigation.
