Special procession held to honour the late Wayne Ashton

By Rosalind Russell – An honourary procession will be part of the Celebration of Life being held today to mark the passing of the late Wayne Ashton of Espanola.

Ashton was one of Canada’s longest-serving volunteer firefighters retiring two years ago with 50 years of service and the rank of Associate Chief.

He was also known for his outgoing and giving nature with other organizations including a stint as a security guard for the OPP.

Fire Chief Mike Pichor says all volunteer firefighters, and other service men and women, past and present are asked to meet at 10:30 am at the Espanola Fire Hall this morning, and if possible to be in full uniform.

The procession will then make its way to the Espanola Royal Canadian Legion for the Celebration of Life at 11 am.

Ashton was 77.
