Take Back the Night set for Elliot Lake

By Rosalind Russell – The Counselling Centre of East Algoma in partnership with Maplegate House for Women will be hosting the Take Back the Night gathering in Elliot Lake later this month.

The partners will be hosting the event on Wednesday at 6:30 pm at the Collins Hall.

According to the release, the gathering is being held to take stand in solidarity against domestic and sexual violence. 

In July, seven women and girls were killed in Ontario. There have been 42 confirmed femicides since November 26th, 2023, with 21% of cases involving a victim under the age of 18. These rates mark an alarming increase in the femicides of young children and youth. On average, over 5 femicides are occurring in Ontario every month.

Numbers are not yet available for August.

There will be a silent vigil and several guest speakers. 

This is a free event, and all ages and genders are welcome.
