By Rosalind Russell – The Traditional Ecological Knowledge Elders, TEK for short, has launched a billboard campaign called Stop The Spray.
The Elders launched the campaign this Monday on Sagamok-Anishinabek First Nation to push the Ontario government to stop aerially spraying forested areas with glyphosate, (GLIFF-oh-sate) a substance that has been banned for use in other provinces.
In a statement, the Elders say the herbicide is also recognized by the World Health Organization as a carcinogen.
The group was brought together nearly ten years ago by founder Raymond Owl over concerns about forestry practices they say are destroying the Anishinabek way of life.
The Elders share the Ontario government has denied their request to stop the use of the spray, so they have decided to post the billboard in the hopes public pressure will lead to eventual elimination of the use of glyphosate.
