The School House: École Sainte-Anne students discover the tundra and polar bears

By Rosalind Russell – Since the beginning of the year, grade 4, 5, and 6 students at École Sainte-Anne in Spanish, have been exploring different habitats and their communities.

Most recently, they discovered the tundra, where polar bears swim in icy water and do not feel the cold. By applying a thick layer of grease to their hand and a glove to mimic the layer of fat on a polar bear, the students compared the temperature of their bare hand in icy water with that of the hand covered in grease.

This experiment enabled them to compare the effects on their skin so that they could better understand how the polar bear keeps warm in the icy waters of the tundra.
