Third Annual Rare Children’s Diseases Fundraising Skateathon is set to go

By Rosalind Russell – The third annual Rare Children’s Diseases  Skateathon is all set to go in February.

Kelsey and Alex McKechnie and their family introduced the fundraiser two years ago after their daughter Iris Mae was diagnosed with Pompe Disease, a rare disease that requires monthly infusions as an enzyme replacement therapy and is long-term since no cure has been found.

Kelsey says her daughters has the infusions at Health Sciences North, which can take about eight hours to complete.

She says the event itself is free however people can register as participants (which is meant to be a donation of $25) or donate only.

Alex adds 100% of all proceeds will go towards Pompe Disease Research at McMaster Children’s Hospital- Hamilton Health Sciences.

The Skateathon is set for February 22nd from 11 am to four pm at the Espanola Regional Recreation Complex with ice skating inside or out on the Oval.

She adds it is a family affair with warming fire pits, smores, coffee/hot chocolate, and face painting, the Lions Club will be hosting its large prize raffle and bbq, and there will be craft tables, skills competition, prizes, and more!

She adds her daughter is thriving and has recently celebrated her 150th infusion, and thanks everyone for their kindness and support over the years.
