By Rosalind Russell – This week, six new benches were installed along the Sheriff Creek Wildlife Sanctuary trails in Elliot Lake.
They were funded by BHP & put in place by City Parks staff & BHP.
Since the closure of the Elliot Lake uranium mines, BHP has worked closely with the Penokean Hills Field Naturalists and the City of Elliot Lake under a ‘shared stewardship’ agreement to transform sections of the 407-hectares of heavily mined land into green space and provide recreational and educational opportunities onsite for residents and visitors.
The Sheriff Creek Wildlife Sanctuary was developed on the former Milliken mine tailings management area and is now one of the largest recreation areas in the city.
Along with the six new interpretive signs BHP has also funded, the additions improve not only the educational aspects of walking in the sanctuary but made it more accessible as well.
