By Rosalind Russell – Construction is underway on the new Wikwemikong Nursing Home.
A ground-breaking ceremony was held earlier this week to mark the start of construction of the multi-million-dollar project.
Fundraising got underway last year to build the community’s new $31 million long-term care facility.
Gimaa Kwa Rachel Manitowabi greeted everyone and praised the larger community for the assistance they continue to provide to build the facility, which has been allocated 37 new and 59 upgraded spaces and will offer services to Indigenous residents.
The projected cost for a new facility is $31 million but is eligible for supports of $14-million with the community raising the remaining $17-million.
Although no timeline was given for the build, time is of essence since the licencing for the present facility, which no longer meets new standards, expires June 30th, 2025.
